Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-Myocarditis: Insights into cardiac-immune regulation

Cardio-oncology (the cardiovascular care of cancer patients) has developed as a new translational and clinical field based on the expanding repertoire of mechanism-based cancer therapies. Cardio-oncology can also serve as a novel platform for fundamental cardiovascular investigation. I will discuss two areas of research from our group. The first focuses on the advent of novel hypoxia and angiogenesis-directed therapies which have provided insights into hypoxia sensing in the cardiovascular system. Second, will be a bedside to bench to beside talk regarding the emergence of myocarditis following treatment of cancer patients with immune checkpoint inhibitors, where the role of CTLA-4, PD-1 and other immune checkpoints will be discussed in the cardiovascular system.
