Cardiac Fibroblast Phenotypes: Investigation of the Role of Mitochondrial Structure and Function

More than 6 million Americans suffer from heart failure secondary to acute and chronic disease states that induce cardiac fibrosis. Fibrosis is the deposition of extracellular matrix that leads to cardiac stiffening, and is mediated by the activation of cardiac fibroblasts. Elucidation of novel molecular mediators of the activated fibroblast phenotype is the focus of my current research with particular interest in mitochondrial-related mechanisms.
