Research Description

Microglia in neurodevelopment and neurodevelopment disorders

Personal Statement

I am broadly interested in microglial behaviors in the healthy and diseased mammalian brain especially during development. During my graduate training, I developed a keen interest in microglial biology. There, I focused on understanding and elucidating microglial dynamics during early postnatal development in the mammalian hippocampus both under normal conditions and during simulated ischemia in acute brain slices using confocal microscopy. For my postdoctoral training, I turned my attention to microglial interactions with neurons in living tissues to elucidate some of the interesting bi-directional communication that occurs between these two brain cell types in the healthy brain. As an independent investigator I will combine my graduate and postgraduate training to study microglial roles in and interactions with the nervous system elements during development and developmental disorders such as seizures. I am confident that my studies will help provide significant insights into the function of microglial cells in the mammalian brain.
