Iron regulation of endothelial function
Iron deficiency is a severely understudied health disparity and a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Furthermore, iron deficiency is associated with poor prognosis in chronic diseases with its incidence being reported as high as 61% in patients with heart failure and 85% in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both diseases are also associated with endothelial dysfunction. My work examines the consequences of endothelial iron depletion in iron deficiency anemia and the consequences of endothelial iron accumulation in chronic kidney disease.
