Lupus Associated Cardiovascular Disease: Pathological Role of Endothelial Autoantibodies

Systemic Lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that is 3x more likely to affect minority women compared to white women. SLE has been demonstrated to affect the heart, kidney, and vasculature, leading to a 7-9-fold higher incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to healthy controls. We have recently found that autoantibodies against endothelial cell receptors contribute to the development of cardiovascular complications in the pathogenesis of lupus. Our studies utilize a translational approach from primary cell culture, murine models of SLE, to human subjects to elucidate pathological signaling mechanisms and their contribution to SLE-associated cardiovascular disease.
