Title: Assessment of Brain-Heart Connection in Cardiovascular Diseases – the ABC-CVD study
Summary: This is a prospective, observational study to assess for novel characteristics associated with the brain-heart connection in acute and chronic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Up to 500 participants will be enrolled.
Description: While the connection between cardiovascular health and the brain has been well established, less is known about the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of that connection in CVDs with an abnormal brain-heart connection. This prospective study will contribute to the advancement of science by building upon existing feasibility and efficacy data exploring cerebral oximetry with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a non-invasive measure of cerebral perfusion and function CVDs. Cerebral tissue oximetry, biomarker profile, and cardiac function will be measured in and among patients with acute and chronic CVD associated with an abnormal brain-heart connection, patients with acute and chronic CVD with an expected brain-heart connection, and control participants. We hope to identify potential abnormalities in medial prefrontal cortex perfusion unique to CVDs with abnormal brain-heart connection, and assess for further novel measures of biomarker and cardiac function correlating to the brain-heart connection in acute and chronic CVD.
