Mission Statement

The Abbate research team in the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Virginia is an interdisciplinary bench-to-bedside cardioimmunology research program exploring the role of innate immunity on the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of various cardiovascular diseases and injury. They conduct novel and innovative basic science research and translate their findings into clinical trials in human subjects. The group executes their mission by prioritizing a “team science” approach to research and supports a diverse collective of clinicians, basic scientists, post-doctoral research associates, seasoned investigators, students, and volunteers. They have a targeted interest on the role of Interleukin-1 and have been recognized for their novel work on inflammasome-targeted treatments in acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pericarditis, and myocarditis.
