Congratulations to Dr. Jessica Connelly on her recent RO1 with NIH!

The National Institutes of Health announced that it will fund 22 grants on genome-wide studies of how epigenetic changes define and contribute to specific human diseases and biological processes. Dr. Connelly was one of only 2 young investigators funded out of 22 projects in the Epigenomics Program and only 3 were related to cardiovascular disease. Read More
Brookeman wins 2009 Edlich-Henderson Inventor of the Year Award

Dr. Brookeman shares the UVa Patent Foundation's highest prize with Biomedical Engineering Professor John P. Mugler III PhD. The award recognizes important advances in MRI imaging. Professors Brookeman and Mugler developed pulse sequencing techniques which allow 3D magnetic resonance images to be obtained in as little as 10 minutes. Because patients must remain completely still during the MRI, doctors tended to settle for 2D images prior to these techniques. Read More

Amanda Doran Captures 3 Prestigious Awards This Year!

Amanda Doran, a MD/PhD (MST) Program and Molecular Medicine Graduate Student adds the Jill E. Hungerford Prize to her list of awards including the 2009 Women’s Young Investigator Award and 2008 Robert M. Berne Outstanding Trainee Achievement Award. Read More
Kimberly Kelly PhD Receives Million Dollar Grant for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Kelly recently received a $1.2 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop imaging agents for early detection of pancreatic cancer. With no screening techniques available for detection such as colonoscopy, mammography or PSA testing, Kelly hopes to create a compound which could be used for widespread screening for pancreatic cancer. Brian Duling PhD wins the Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award

The Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award is an honor bestowed by the American Physiological Society to recognize excellence both in research and in the training of new physiologists. Resident faculty member and former CVRC director, Dr. Brian Duling, was named the next recipient of this annual award. Dr. Duling's training program has been a great success at the CVRC for many years. Read More

CVRC Surpasses Goals for AHA Heart Walk Fundraising

Despite the late start, the Cardiac Crusaders raised $2,346, surpassing the goal of $1500. Fundraising projects this year included two bake sales and a raffle for two UVA jackets. Read More
Articles by CVRC Members Featured in "Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology"

Two articles written by CVRC faculty and students were selected for the American Heart Association's "Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology" Journal. Martin Schwartz PhD, Brett Blackman PhD, Anthony Bruce, Ryan Feaver and Melissa Lansey contributed to an article titled "Endothelial Cell PECAM-1 Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions in Areas of Disturbed Flow in ApoE-Deficient Mice". Ellen Keeley MD and Robert Strieter MD contributed to an article titled "Chemokines as Mediators of Neovascularization".

CVRC Members Dominates this Month’s Issue of "Circulation Research"

Four CVRC members gained publicity this month and were honored by having their work selected for publication in the American Heart Association's – "Circulation Research" journal.

Drs. Brett Blackman and Martin Schwartz's article titled "p21-Activated Kinase Signaling Regulates Oxidant-Dependent NF-{kappa}B Activation by Flow" were featured on the cover of the journal and in the Integrative Physiology section. Read More
Dr. David Glover's Talk, "Molecular Imaging of Lox-1 to Assess Atherosclerotic Plaque" Wins First Prize at the Annual Scientific Session of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. Read More

We received several applications this round and the Scientific Advisory Committee has chosen to fund two awardees in the amount of $25,000 to assist with their research in their project areas.
