Funding Opportunities
AstraZeneca Alliance Funding - We are delighted to announce a research alliance between AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AZ) and The University of Virginia (UVA) in the area of cardiovascular disease, with the goal of identifying and validating novel therapeutic targets, treatment methods, and diagnostic methods.
AstraZeneca invites applications for research proposals to support innovative research in cardiovascular science with strong preference given to proposals that address at least one of the five primary areas of pre-clinical/translational research outlined in the following list. We intend to fund a total of 8-10 research proposals each year during a 3-year period with a maximum budget of $75,000 direct costs per year. Funded applications will be eligible for competitive renewal on a yearly basis.
If you plan on submitting a proposal, you must send a letter of intent to Gary K. Owens at gko@virginia.edu and no later than 5 PM Friday October 9, 2009. The letter of intent should state the primary objectives of your proposal and briefly summarize how the project will address one or more of the five target areas outlined in the RFP. The letter of intent must also include a preliminary abstract of your proposal less than 250 words. We recognize that this preliminary abstract may differ from the final version submitted with your final proposal by October 19, 2009. However, the final project proposal submitted must be fundamentally the same as that described in the letter of intent and preliminary abstract unless you get advance permission from me in writing for them to differ. The reason for this is that the CVRC and the UVA Patents Foundation must conduct an initial IP review of the letters of intent and preliminary abstracts prior to the full proposal submission deadline of 5 PM Monday October 19, 2009. If necessary we will contact you to ensure adequate protections are in place to protect IP prior to making proposals available to AZ.

The Partners Award supports programs making contributions to our basic understanding of cardiovascular function and pathophysiology. Special emphasis is placed on the funding of young investigators or investigators who propose new initiatives to redirect their research into promising areas. The Heart Center Partner's Fund will award up to four grants in aid of up to $25,000 each year. This is a one year, nonrenewable grant intended to support the generation of preliminary data for NIH R01 applications.
